What is the Olmsted County Solar Initiative?

We are a coalition of students from high schools around Minnesota, working closely with local businesses and the community at large. We collaborate together to overcome the prohibitive initial costs of solar energy.  Schools interested in joining the initiative can find out more here.

Our Mission

We install Photovoltaic solar systems on high schools to:

1.  Expose students to alternative, clean and sustainable energy.
2.  To educate students about solar energy and photovoltaic technology.
3.  Provide clean and sustainable energy for the schools.
4.  To show that students can take the lead on confronting the pressing environmental problems that face our generation.

Our Goal:
By September 2009, OCSolar will have raised $1,000,000 to install fifty 6kW solar systems around the state of Minnesota.

Environmental Impact
Our first system will offset over 900,000 pounds, or 450 tons, of carbon dioxide, 5,400 pounds of sulfur dioxide, and 4,320 pounds of nitrous oxide.

    Educational Impact
We are working with RPU to get a data acquisition system so students can monitor the energy output from the system and teachers can incorporate the data into curriculum. On this highly visible facade, facing the main student parking lot, 11th Ave SW, 16th St SW and both main entrances, students and visitors alike will be exposed to solar technology. Our four systems will educate over 190,000 students over their lifetimes!
